Description

Gastrointestinal surgery is performed for a range of benign and malignant diseases in both elective and emergency settings. However, many of these operations are followed by complications, which need early detection so that they can be managed in a way that is rational, evidence-based and makes the best use of the available local resources.
Complications after Gastrointestinal Surgery is an up-to-date and comprehensive reference book for practicing and aspiring gastrointestinal and general surgeons as well as for trainees and assistants. With contributions from more than 90 experts from 15 different countries, it offers a systematic description of the general aspects of surgical complications. It discusses institutional issues such as managing complications in limited-resource settings and the impact of centralisation and checklists. It also describes the ways to deal with specific post-surgery problems pertaining to different organs such as the oesophagus, the small and large intestines, pancreas and liver.

Review

Complications after surgery occur even among the best and most experienced surgeons in the world. This hardcover textbook provides an exhaustive review of the complications in abdominal surgery, including strategies to avoid these complications and ways to manage those that are unavoidable. It also provides the reader with a framework for reading the surgical literature in regards to, grading systems for complications and outcomes research.
The book is well organized into organ systems throughout the gastrointestinal tract with each chapter beginning with an abstract that well summarizes the material to be presented. The authors are predominantly from Europe, India, and Australia; however, the references are well represented by North American literature as well.
It will serve well as a text for fourth-year medical students and interns and as a primer to more in-depth reading of selected topics for upper-level residents and junior attending. Senior surgeons sitting for their recertification examinations will also benefit.
This hardcover textbook sells for $156.00, which is well worth the investment, as it can be used at all levels of training and is a good starting point for further reading on selected topics.
