Description

As You Like It is a romantic comedy which was written along the lines of a Christian comedy, celebrating themes like brotherly love, marital union and a general restoration of faith. Mostly set in the Forest of Arden, the play’s narrative focuses on pastiche as a space for reflection and introspection that enables the characters of the play to reform their ways.

The play has one of the most important Shakespearean heroines, Rosalind, who is the daughter of the banished Duke Senior. Her uncle, Duke Frederick, usurps his brother’s throne but at first allows her to stay in the court because of her friendship with his daughter, Celia. Finally, insecure of the dynamic Rosalind, Duke Frederick banishes Rosalind and her faithful friend, Celia follows her into the woods. Rosalind disguises herself as a boy named Ganymede to prevent detection and what follows is a series of amusing events. The play finally culminates with the happy union of four couples, including Rosalind and Orlando.

This edition of The New Clarendon Shakespeare contains a detailed introduction to the play with discussions on the date and style, text and plot of the play. It also contains a commentary on the text and select literary criticism. The appendix includes a summary of Lodge’s Rosalynde.

Illuminating Shakespeare explores the writer’s life and work through video essays, articles, and creative resources for every level from school to scholar. Visit the site at www.oup.com/shakespeare
