Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom is a Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of Global Shanghai, China's Brave New World, and Twentieth Century China.

This rather small book serves a far larger purpose, which is to explain modern China through accessible descriptions drawn from history. Most of the questions the author addresses are intelligent and essential, and in many cases answered with lucidity, proportion and balance.
