गाँधी एक लोकप्रिय जननेता और जननायक रहे। दुनिया में अपनी सदी के नायकों में एक। भारतीय समाज में जाति और वर्ण व्यवस्था पर गाँधी के रुख को लेकर उनकी आलोचनाएं होती रहीं। निशिकांत कोलगे अपनी इस किताब ‘जाति के विरुद्ध गाँधी का संघर्ष’ में गाँधी के उस पक्ष की विवेचना करते हैं जिसको लेकर गाँधी की आलोचना की जाती रही है। लेखक ने जातिगत भेदभावों से जुड़े गाँधी के विचारों और बयानों का विश्लेषण किया है। तीन दशकों (1915-1948) में गाँधी जातिगत सवाल पर कई रूपों में पेश आए। यह पुस्तक एक ‘कूटनीतिज्ञ गाँधी’ की छवि को सामने लाती है। 1909 में, जब गाँधी दक्षिण अफ्रीका में ही थे, उन्होंने सार्वजनिक तौर पर जाति व्यवस्था की निंदा की। जबकि अपने भारत वापसी के कुछ ही समय बाद उन्होंने जाति व्यवस्था के लाभदायक पहलुओं पर बात रखी। जाति व्यवस्था पर गाँधी का लेखन विरोधाभासी विचारों को प्रकट करता रहा है। क्या गाँधी ने भारतीय समाज की चातुर्वर्ण व्यवस्था का समर्थन किया या वे जाति प्रथा के खिलाफ़ थे? इन सवालों के जवाब और सामाजिक बदलाव की प्रक्रिया को लेकर गाँधी के विचारों को यह किताब हमारे समक्ष रखती है। जाति के विरुद्ध गाँधी का संघर्ष- यह लड़ाई अभी ख़त्म नहीं हुई है। English Translation In 1909, while still in South Africa, Gandhi publicly decried the caste system for its inequalities. Shortly after his return to India though, he spoke of the generally beneficial aspects of caste. Gandhi's writings on caste reflect contradictory views and his critics accuse him of neglecting the unequal socio-economic structure that relegated Dalits to the bottom of the caste hierarchy. So, did Gandhi endorse the fourfold division of the Indian society or was he truly against caste? In this book, Nishikant Kolge investigates the entire range of what Gandhi said or wrote about caste divisions over a period of more than three decades: from his return to India in 1915 to his death in 1948. Interestingly, Kolge also maps Gandhi's own statements that undermined his stance against the caste system. These writings uncover the 'strategist Gandhi' who understood that social transformation had to be a slow process for the conservative but powerful section of Hindus who were not yet ready for radical reforms. Seven decades after it attained freedom from colonial powers, caste continues to influence the socio-political dynamics of India, and Gandhi against caste --the battle is not over yet. About the Author निशिकांत कोलगे, सीएसडीएस- दिल्ली में एसोसिएट प्रोफ़ेसर हैं। उन्होंने त्रिपुरा विश्वविद्यालय के इतिहास विभाग में आठ वर्ष पढ़ाया है। वे कई भाषाओं के जानकार हैं। हाल ही में उन्हें फुलब्राइट-नेहरू पोस्ट–डॉक्टोरल फेलोशिप 2018-19 से भी नवाज़ा गया है।
