Othello is among Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies and is considered to be one of his best works. The play focuses on a private world, besieged with human passions. Often described as the ‘tragedy of character’, Othello’s jealousy and mistrust of his wife, Desdemona, forms the crux of the play.
Othello’s ensign, Iago, is the ‘motiveless’ villain of the play who sows the seeds of suspicion in Othello’s mind, leading him to believe that his wife would no longer love an older black man once the novelty wears off. She would rather partner with Michael Cassio, the Moor’s favourite white lieutenant. Driven with rage and racial insecurity, Othello fails to see Desdemona’s genuine affection for him as the play ends in a gory tragedy.
This edition of The New Clarendon Shakespeare contains a detailed introduction to the play with discussions on the date, the text, the play’s history on the Elizabethan stage and its plot. It also contains a commentary on the text and select literary criticism. The appendix includes a brief note on the sources used by Shakespeare.
Illuminating Shakespeare explores the writer’s life and work through video essays, articles, and creative resources for every level from school to scholar. Visit the site at www.oup.com/shakespeare
