The Merchant of Venice is considered a ‘problem play’ due to its ambiguous projection of themes like romance and racial discrimination. The play combines two major strands of themes—one of the ultimate mythical quest to win over one’s beloved and the other involving the old prejudice against Jews.

Description

The Merchant of Venice is considered a ‘problem play’ due to its ambiguous projection of themes like romance and racial discrimination. The play combines two major strands of themes—one of the ultimate mythical quest to win over one’s beloved and the other involving the old prejudice against Jews.

The play takes place in sixteenth century Venice. Shylock, a Jewish money-lender seeks a gruesome payment of a pound of flesh from Antonio due to the latter’s failure to return his loan, as per their agreement. However, Portia, the heroine of the play who is married to Bassanio, manages to save her husband’s friend by the use of her intellect and wit. While the play has been criticized for its anti-Semitic sentiments post World War II, a close reading reveals that Shakespeare was far from condemning it.

This edition of The New Clarendon Shakespeare contains a detailed introduction to the play with discussions on the date, text and plot of the play. It also contains a commentary on the text and select literary criticism. The appendix includes notes on Shakespeare’s life and language.

Illuminating Shakespeare explores the writer’s life and work through video essays, articles, and creative resources for every level from school to scholar. Visit the site at www.oup.com/shakespeare
